It happens more often than what most of us would like to admit. We are sailing through our day and bam…out of nowhere we get triggered.
Perhaps you’re delayed in traffic, maybe it’s a stressful conversation you were not expecting, it could even be a song you hear that evokes a negative emotional reaction out of nowhere from you.
Without a plan in place to offset being triggered, you risk losing your emotional stability; your emotions are instantly hijacked.
You and only you are responsible for your emotions. Not staying in control of your emotions is counterproductive to your performance and could negatively affect those around you.
By learning to manage your emotions, you will be much better equipped to maintain composure under pressure which fosters mental grit; resilience.
Research shows that our ability to manage the flow of thought and emotion contributes to our happiness. (R. Wright 2017)
3 Easy Steps to take charge of your emotions and stay cool under pressure:
- Press Pause and Tempo Breathe
This allows your stress hormones to abate.
- Ground Yourself
When you ground or center yourself, you bring your energy to the center of your body which helps promote mindfulness and a sense of calm.
- Choose Your Thoughts
Creating a habit of choosing your thoughts fosters new healthy feelings to overcome the toxic or destructive ones. Perspective oftentimes replaces bitterness or resentment and allows you to feel a greater sense of happiness.
Keep believing,
